Azbil Announces Support for the Keidanren Declaration on Biodiversity Conservation and Guidelines (revised December 12, 2023)—Contributing to the Realization of a Sustainable Economy and Society

TOKYO, Mar. 29, 2024: Azbil Corporation (Tokyo Stock Exchange code 6845) has expressed its support for the Keidanren Declaration on Biodiversity Conservation and Guidelines (revised December 12, 2023) *1. As well as being in full agreement with the spirit of this declaration, we are in the process of implementing sustainability management globally with the aim of realizing a sustainable society. Moreover, we will continue to participate in the Keidanren Initiative for Biodiversity Conservation.

Environmental initiatives for sustainability management
Guided by the philosophy of “human-centered automation” and aiming to realize a sustainable society, we are promoting sustainability management through the integration into our business activities of a wide range of social/environmental activities—tackling such issues as climate change, resource recycling, and biodiversity conservation.

Climate change

While working to reduce CO2 emissions at our customers’ sites—by providing products, services, and solutions—we are also escalating the internal testing and application of energy-saving technologies we have developed in our business so as to achieve our 2030 for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. We are also promoting the use of renewable energy. Furthermore, in June 2023, we submitted a letter of commitment to the SBTi*2 stating that within two years we intend to formally set a net-zero CO2 emissions target for 2050 for the entire supply chain, including the azbil Group and submit the requisite application.

Resource recycling

Through our business activities, we are working to reduce waste, water, and other resources. Moreover, we are employing sustainable product design to ensure effective use of natural resources while reducing the amount of waste generated. We have also set a goal of making all new products 100% recyclable by 2030; the aim is to design products that, on disposal, can be properly disassembled, so the parts can be sorted and recycled by the customer.

Biodiversity conservation

In providing support for the Keidanren Declaration on Biodiversity Conservation and Guidelines, and adopting a Nature Positive*3 perspective, we will continue contributing to biodiversity conservation through our business. We are also promoting initiatives across the supply chain, including our partners, and working with domestic and overseas organizations to intensify our nature conservation activities.

Azbil will be a leader in tackling important global issues, guided by the azbil Group philosophy of “human-centered automation.” Worldwide, the entire Group is committed to the United Nations’ SDGs.

*12023 revision of the Keidanren Declaration on Biodiversity Conservation
In December 2022, the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) was adopted and, following the March 2023 Cabinet approval of the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan 2023-2030, the Japanese government has been accelerating biodiversity initiatives. Spurred on by these developments, in December 2023 the Keidanren (Japan Business Federation) and the Keidanren Committee on Nature Conservation revised the Keidanren Declaration on Biodiversity Conservation and Guidelines. While remaining true to the spirit of the original 2009 declaration and the 2018 revision, the 2023 revision also reflects the following goals:
• Realizing the GBF’s 2050 vision: A world of living in harmony with nature;
• Realizing Nature Positive (conserving and restoring nature) to halt and reverse biodiversity loss in order to put nature on a path to recovery by 2030; and
• Realizing a sustainable economy and society.

*2SBTi (Science Based Targets Initiative)
The SBTi is a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). It helps corporations achieve science-based targets (SBT) for reducing CO2 emissions.

*3Nature Positive
A commitment to halt and reverse the loss of natural ecosystems
